Modular at the Edge: Zella DC Unveils Stackable Micro Data Center for AI Workloads

Deploying traditional server racks or building full-scale data centers in tight, unconventional edge environments has always been a logistical headache for IT teams. Australian micro data center provider Zella DC is tackling this issue head-on with the launch of its newest platform: Zella Stack.

Officially unveiled at the Yotta 2026 conference in Las Vegas, the system introduces a flexible, stackable architecture designed to bring scalable computing power directly to hard-to-reach locations.

Scalable Infrastructure: From Small Footprints to High Density

Rather than forcing organizations to commit to large, rigid setups from day one, Zella Stack allows users to start small and scale their hardware footprint as demand grows.

The system relies on a modular build consisting of 12RU containers measuring roughly 51.2 × 27.6 × 22.8 inches. A complete setup can stack up to four of these units, delivering a total capacity of 48RU.

Here is how the architecture is structured:

  • The Base Module: Positioned on wheels for mobility, this foundational unit houses all essential infrastructure needed to power and run the system.
  • IT Modules: Up to three additional server blocks are stacked directly on top of the base module to expand compute space.

At the top end of the lineup sits the flagship Zella Stack 48. Fully assembled, the structure stands roughly 2.48 meters (over 8 feet) tall and weighs around 185 kg (408 lbs). Despite its size, it maintains a remarkably quiet operating noise level of just 50 decibels—making it well-suited for close-proximity operational environments.

Built for Next-Gen AI Cooling Demands

As edge locations increasingly run resource-heavy AI workloads, managing thermal output becomes a critical factor. Zella DC designed the Stack platform to accommodate diverse power and thermal configurations, supporting both air and liquid cooling.

With cooling capacity scaling up to 124kW, the platform can handle significantly higher heat densities than standard edge cabinets. This opens the door for deploying high-performance AI inferencing hardware right where data is generated, without risking thermal throttling.

Furthermore, because the components arrive as self-contained units, deployment is exceptionally fast. The company notes that an operational edge data center can be fully assembled and running within a matter of days.

Remote Management and Built-In Security

At the heart of the platform is Zella Sense, an integrated control, automation, and monitoring layer embedded across Zella DC’s product suite.

To ensure safe, unmanned operation in remote areas, Zella Sense continuously tracks key environmental and operational metrics:

  • Environmental Sensors: Monitors temperature, humidity, water leaks, smoke, and physical movement.
  • Physical Security: Features integrated access control, door monitoring, and built-in fire protection.
  • Integrations & Alerts: Supports standard protocols like SNMP, Modbus, and a robust API, alongside email alerts and secure authentication options (Local, LDAP, RADIUS, or TACACS+).

Changing the Edge Landscape

Zella DC (formerly known as Zellabox) has built its reputation on the “data center in a box” concept—integrating power, cooling, security, and remote management into self-contained indoor and outdoor enclosures.

With Zella Stack, the company offers a pragmatic answer to one of edge computing’s biggest challenges: how to incrementally scale high-density, AI-ready compute power in places where traditional infrastructure simply cannot fit.
